Today you are going to design a picture that could be used on the Christmas music program!
The themes this year are:
Santa, Elves, Reindeer, Clocks, and Dance Party
  1. Have students try recall the names of some of their songs for their music program.
  2. Talk about the above themes and how to make art that can be used on the cover of them music program. (It must be drawn in pencil, traced in sharpie, and the pencil marks erased afterward.
  3. Demonstrate on paper taped to whiteboard, how to draw christmas themed subjects using basic shapes. Demo. tracing lines with a sharpie so that they know not to color with it.
  4. Remind students to draw a background...is it outside on the rooftop, at the North Pole, or by a Christmas tree? What are the characters doing?
  5. Distribute papers and pencils. Have students write their name on the back.

1st Day of Art

Welcome to art class!

We are going to have an exciting year together, full of discovery and art making. We will draw, collage, paint, and sculpt. We will discover what it means to be an artist and how to work like an artist--because we are all artists!

What do artists do anyway?
What kinds of things do they make art with?
What do artists make pictures of?
How do artists work? (quietly, they think...)

Some of you mentioned that artists draw. Today we are going to draw a picture of a person. What things do you need to draw if your are drawing a person?

Share Time:

  • We talked about working like an artist earlier today. What does that mean to you?
  • Did anyone work like an artist today?
  • What can we do to work like artists?
  • Describe the person you drew.

Making a Mural

What is a Mural?
A mural is a large scale painting executed directly on a wall or ceiling

Murals can be purely decorative, but often they have a message to share with the viewer

We are making murals on paper, to hang on the wall.

Is your mural decorative, or does your art have a message?

(We made ocean murals after guest speakers visited our school and shared information about the Great Barrier Reef)

Watch the creation of this mural:
