Winter is coming!

Just have a few short days until winter break!

Let's celebrate the upcoming season by making
some frosty pictures of our own!

What are some activities Peter did on the snowy day?
What will you do on a snowy day?

1. On a 9x12 white paper draw a curved line for the snowy ground in white oil pastel.  Color the ground completely. Add snowflakes to the sky in white.
2. Imagine what you will do on a snowy day, and with colored oil pastels, draw you doing that activity.

1. Generate and conceptualize artistic ideas and work.

A. Play & Ideation

Engage in exploration and imaginative play with materials

'Tis the time of year for all things cold and wintery, especially Snowmen!

But we don't always have snow to build one with.

Is there anything else we could use when we get the inspiration to make a snowman?

'Snowballs' is a book that might give us some ideas.

Can you make your own collage snowman?

Can you use your imagination and give your snowy friend a personality and a name?

Draw a House from Observation - Exploring Buildings and Communities

Unit 3 Explore Buildings & Communities - Draw a House from Observation

 Homes!

Create

2. Organize and develop artistic ideas and work.

C. Creating Interactions with Art

Create art that represents natural and constructed environments

What materials do yere used to make your house? Wood, brick, concrete, stone, metal etc.

How can you show that in a piece of art? Line, shape, color

What are some important details to include in your house?

Life would be much more challenging if we didn't have strong buildings that protect us. Houses around the world look different depending on where you live and what materials they are made from.

My dream house has bricks and rectangle windows. I drew my house like I remember my house is.

Architects are important, they design the buildings we live and work in.

Today we are going to make Architect Drawings by looking at a building closely and drawing what we see. Maybe you will be surprised by the things you notice when you look closely!

What buildings are in your city? -Collage City

 Create a Collage City

Create

2. Organize and develop artistic ideas and work.

C. Creating Interactions with Art

Create art that represents natural and constructed environments

Buildings are all around us!

Let's take some time to talk about the important and interesting buildings that are in our lives.

What would life be like if we didn't have buildings?

Where would we eat or sleep or learn?

An artist named Romare Bearden loved the buildings on his street. He created many important works of art about them.

There is so much going on in this long collage, lets look more closely at a few sections.

Where can you see rectangles?

What other shapes can you find?

What are some of the buildings in your town used for?
This building has a barber shop.

Can you tell what this building was made out of?
How does the artist show what is happening inside the building?

Today we are going to create buildings using shapes we cut out of paper to create a Collage City!

Giving Thanks

When was the last time you said "Thank You"?

Thank you are two pretty special words.
Maybe you said "Thank you" when your teacher tied your shoes, or your friend said "I like your art"

It is always a good time to say Thank You, but this week we celebrate something called Thanksgiving
Basically a whole day dedicated to giving thanks for the good things in our lives.

I am thankful for my family.

I am thankful for my pets.

I am thankful for YOU!

There are many ways to say thank you. Can you think of any?
- Writing a note
- Doing something nice for someone
- Giving a gift

There is another way to say thank you. We can use sign language!
Let's practice.

Next time when you want to say "thank you", use your sign language.

Let's listen to a story about giving thanks. It may help us remember all the wonderful things that are in the world around us.

One of the things I am most thankful for is the food I eat each day.
That is something all humans share, we all need and appreciate the food the eat.
We can make a symbol for food, by creating a piece of Maize, a kind of corn grown by people native to the Americas. Maize is colorful and interesting.
This corn can help us remember to say "Thank You"

Oil Pastel Leaves

Today we are going to be looking closely at leaves and drawing all of the detail that we can see.

The word Observe means to look at something closely, so when an artist looks closely at something and draws it in detail, we call that, drawing from observation.

We are going to use a new kind of drawing tool today. In past lessons we have explored crayon, chalk pastel to draw. Today we will be using oil pastel.
Oil pastel is a kind of drawing tool. Each pastel is a stick, made of pigment (colored powder) mixed with a non-drying oil and wax. Oil pastels are like cousins to crayons.
You will notice that these beautiful drawing tools color on bright, smooth and creamy.

Supplies:
A variety of brown and tan 9x12 construction paper

Working as Artists:Painting Shapes

With a Paintbrush We Can Create Shapes.

Create

2. Organize and develop artistic ideas and work.

A. Skill Acquisition

Through experimentation on, build skills in various media and approaches to art making.

How do you think this artist moved his brush to create these shapes?

August Light, Hans Hoffmann
What shapes do you see?

Can you tell if the artist was painting a shape with up and down brushstrokes or side to side brushstrokes?

2 ways to create shapes:

Blob Method
  • Dip brush in water to water
  • Load your brush with paint
  • Move the paint up and down, or back and forth until you have a shape that resembles a square.
Outline Method
  • Paint two vertical lines.
  • Cross them with two horizontal lines so that you have a square.
  • Fill the square with paint. Demonstrate both methods of painting another shape, such as a circle or a triangle.
Paint the white spaces, leave the shapes so we can see them.
Remember to rinse and wipe the brush.

  • Give students tiny brushes and black tempera to paint on top of their shapes.

Art talk questions:
1. Did you paint shapes in different sizes?
2. Did you paint any geometric shapes? How about free-form shapes?

We like the Shapes!

Supplies:
Paper
Paint (tempera, cake tempera, watercolors)
If you don't use paint, markers, crayons or oil pastels can be used)

Thinking and Working as Artists-Chalk Pastel

Thinking and Working as Artists-Chalk Pastel

Create

2. Organize and develop artistic ideas and work.

A. Skill Acquisition

Through experimentation on, build skills in various media and approaches to art making.

What happens when you put one color on top of another?
What happens when you blend with your finger?
What happens when you press harder/lighter when you color with a pastel?

What can I do with a Chalk Pastel?

A chalk pastel is made from a powdery substance that is used for drawing and comes in many different colors.
Chalk pastels are like cousins to sidewalk chalk.

Chalk pastels have a soft look, and can be blended easily.

Today we are going to make a paper sculpture of a playground.
Sculpture is three-dimensional. You can see it from many sides because it stands up from the base.
When we make paper sculpture, we cut, fold, curl and glue the paper to make it stand.

Think about last time you played on a playground...
What were some of your favorite things to play on?

Painting at Last!!!

Create

2. Organize and develop artistic ideas and work.

A. Skill Acquisition

Through experimentation on, build skills in various media and approaches to art making.

Today, we are going to become friends with our paintbrush.
We are going to learn different ways to hold and control the marks we make with this new tool.

Every painting begins with a brushstroke. A brushstroke is a mark made by a paintbrush.
What kinds of brushstrokes do you see in these paintings?

Wassily Kandinsky, Untitled

Franz Kline, Mahoning

Exploring the Paintbrush, how to hold, and control movement:

  • parts of paintbrush--bristle, ferrule, handle
  • how to hold a paintbrush
  • Children locate shoulder, elbow wrist and finger, hold joint with free hand. Pretend to paint in air moving each joint. Notice how the length of the brushstroke changes.
