Welcome to art class! We are going to have an exciting year together in art, full of discovery
and art making. We make many kinds of art using a lot of different art supplies. We are going to learn
what it means to be an artist and how to work like an artist because we are all artists.

The purpose of today's art lesson is to:
Teach growth mindset by modeling turning accidental tears, smears, or scribbles into creative art. It's OK to make a mistake. A mistake is an adventure in creativity! Yay for mistakes! Often they help us come up with new ideas and be more creative :)
  • Listen to author Barney Saltzberg sing : Beautiful Oops! aloud, point out how stains, rips, and folds become interesting creatures.
  • Talk About Feelings: Ask students how they feel when they make a mistake on their work, and discuss how we can work with our mistakes and the feelings that come with them, instead of giving up.
  • Watch Barney Saltzberg demonstrate how mistakes can lead to creative solutions: Video- demonstrate an oops and have students make several suggestions for an "oops" Ask how they feel when they are creating from an "oops"
  • Pass Out "Oops" Paper: Give each student an oops paper
  • Transform the Mistake: Have students use markers or crayons to turn the random mark into an animal, monster, or object or something interesting or beautiful.
  • Song/Book
  • Barney Saltzberg begin at 3:28
